ABOUT OUR CABINETS

 

Cabinets of Curiosity originally were rooms containing objects relating to life and the world around us.  In the 16th century they became pieces of furniture filled with contents reflecting the cosmos on a miniature scale.  They are the precursors to our museums, and in the 16th to 18th century featured in paintings, in which the realistic 'trompe l'oeil' effect created the optical illusion that the cabinets existed in three dimensions.
